“Republicans are more likely to...” and, “Democrats are more likely to...” - At a Glance

After Markos’ call for getting together for the General Election, maybe it is time for us to remember some of the real, big differences between the two parties. I have done some recent speaking on this in the Dallas area, and prepared this sheet for my audiences. You may want to edit, or add other issues. I kept it to one sheet, so there are definitely some missing items (like, Supreme Court justice nomination considerations).

But I think this captures some key differences with a simple phrase: “Republicans are more likely to…,” and, “Democrats are more likely to…”

There may be exceptions within each party, but which party is elected, in every elected official position, leads us either one way or the other as a country...

Just to state the obvious, I line up on the Democratic side of this sheet.

This is not about those who wish President Obama was doing more of what we think he promised. (And, yes, I would love to get it all!).

I have a friend -- a sweet woman, she lives in a retirement community (where I do some speaking and discussion leading). She asked me the other day: "Are you still glad you voted for Obama, after all he is doing?" I asked her: "what is he doing that he did not campaign on?" She said -- "Oh, I know he said all this stuff. But now he is actually trying to do it." And therein lies the rub.

The people who voted for him need to remember that he campaigned on health care reform. He told us this was coming. And, now, he wants to actually do it.

It reminded me of the moment late in the movie The American President. It is Sorkin writing at his best. Here's the exchange:

I teach speech at the community college level, and every semester I hand out the text of the great “I Have a Dream” speech by Dr. Martin Luther King. I have my students do a number of things with the speech, but primarily I have them circle key phrases. And one thing is obvious. Dr. King repeated key phrases over and over again. "I have a dream; one day; now is the time; let freedom ring." And many more. The list is long. And the repetition is powerful, persuasive, all-encompassing. For too long, we have focused on this particular outrage or that particular claim from the right. Limbaugh, or Beck, or Gingrich says this offensive/untrue/outrageous thing and we get all worked up and demand a retraction or an apology or a boycott or a termination. We have argued for better framing (which I agree with – I deeply respect the work of George Lakoff).

Here is the key moment from This Week yesterday with Governor Dean and Newt Gingrich. (Transcript here).

DEAN: Wait a minute. You -- you -- not you personally -- but the Republicans have had times over the last -- since the last time we tried this, was 15 years, where you had the president, the House, and the Senate, and nothing happened.

GINGRICH: And they failed. I agree.

DEAN: So, OK, so we've got to do something.

GINGRICH: I'm not defending that.

DEAN: We think this will work.

Newt Gingrich admitted that when the Republicans had the chance, "They failed. I agree" Yes, they did, and we agree with you. We need to quote this, in his own words, far and wide.

There is a terrific diary today about the e-mails that brought down a Republican Governor. This incident provides a good excuse to remind us all of this simple fact: there is no such thing as an e-mail.

E-mail is a delivery system, pure and simple. With e-mail, one is provided with a filing system. But there is no such thing as an e-mail There are only documents that are delivered and stored through this system.

Who is running for what office? It can get confusing, at times. There are clearly some folks who wish that the Republican ticket were reversed.

Here in North Dallas, we have more than our share of Republicans. The long serving Republican Congressman is Pete Sessions. (He beat Martin Frost in a a post-redistricting election a while back). He has paid for at least one big Sarah! sign, which is displayed quite prominently on a major thoroughfare, Abrams Road, just a couple of blocks from a key intersection in this North Dallas neighborhood. It really has to be seen to be believed. "Paid for by Pete Sessions for Congress" is in the lower left corner. (If this sign has already been all over Daily Kos, my apology. I read regularly, but not every hour...)

I spend a lot of time in my car, due to the nature of my work. I am a member of our local NPR station, and spend most of my radio time on that channel. But years ago, I started a practice of getting just enough of the right wing radio folks to know what they are saying.

I live in Dallas. The number one rated AM station has Rush and Hannity, with a local member of their echo chamber, Mark Davis, in the morning. I remember vividly the attacks by Limbaugh on Kerry during the last election.

I assure you that Hillary Clinton is right -- whoever is the nominee will be attacked as strongly as she would be. (Though I think Obama will be up for the challenge).

I teach speech at one of the campuses in the Dallas County Community College system. I am an adjunct professor, and my graduate training is in Rhetoric and Public Address. I also make my living as a speaker/ trainer. So -- I teach, I speak, and I train. I have also done some speech coaching for Democratic candidates and business clients.

Yesterday, I attended Obama's rally at Reunion Arena. (17,000+ people!) I also attended Huckabee's speech last night in Plano, TX. For years, I have attended every event I could to observe the speaking style of presidential candidates. In 1996, I heard Bill Clinton and Bob Dole within a two-week period. What a contrast!

We all know that Obama is a superior speaker. What does he do that makes him so? The list is long, but let me mention three specific tools that he has in his arsenal.

Jimmy Carter's 2005 book, Our Endangered Values, speaks directly to so many of the concerns expressed by the people in this community.

In Dallas, I speak at a monthly gathering at which I present a synopsis of a book dealing with issues of social justice. This month, the book was President Carter's book. Here is a key quote that summarizes his heart, revealing his Christian core, though also revealing that that core is quite different from what is found among many in the right-wing Christian community:

"I believe that anyone can be successful in life, regardless of natural talent or the environment within which we live. This is not based on measuring success by human competitiveness for wealth, possessions, influence, and fame, but adhering to God’s standards of truth, justice, humility, service, compassion, forgiveness, and love." (p. 28).
